Rule 10: Trade

Everything is a trade.

Was it healthy. No. It was a trade. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. The hours went somewhere. The body paid, or the work paid, or the marriage paid. Pretending the bill does not exist is how the bill gets paid in a currency you did not pick.

Time is the base currency. Money is a proxy. Status is a proxy. Spent time is gone. That framing already lives in the mindset essay. I am not going to perfume it.

The filter is Derek Sivers', and I am crediting it once. If the answer to should I do this is not a full-body hell yeah, the answer is no. I use it. I do not own it.

Meh is the killer. Fine is the enemy. Fine is what fills the cracks. A fine evening is not a scandal. A decade of fine evenings is a wasted decade, and nobody can point at the night it happened. The invitation was reasonable. The show was fine. The seat on the board was an honor. Most of what you say no to is fine. You say no anyway. That is the hard part. The disgusting no is easy. The fine no is the discipline.

A human can hold maybe three priorities at the level required to move them. A household can hold maybe two. I am reconciling the count here so the other essays stop fighting.

One root. Health. The body is the first node, and the standards hang off it: the food, the lift, the walk. The marriage is the second, and the table is how it gets its hours. The site, the land, the inner ring are downstream of those two, or they do not get a slot. A six-item list next to "no second priority" was the bug. This is the fix.

The standing orders are not a fresh hell yeah on a Tuesday morning. Zone 2. Leg day. The game night that happens whether anyone feels like it. Those were hell yeahs on the day they were set, sober, looking at the data. After that they are orders. Rule 5 enforces them. This rule is not allowed to renegotiate them at 9pm because the morning was meh.

Choose the failures.

An Amazon VP decided each morning how he was going to fail that day. The question is whether you choose the failures or the failures choose themselves. You were already failing at most things. The calendar was already full of nos you did not notice. Picking the nos is the relief. The disappointed friend is real. The missed thing that was genuinely good is real. Focus has a cost. Name it, or this turns into productivity porn.

Here is the multiplication, on a number you already pay.

A streaming bill feels like a month. It is not a month. A recurring expense is a lifetime tax, on the order of 1500 times the monthly number across a working life. Run it on yours. The truck is a liability with a louder exhaust. The object converts time into a thing, and the thing does not give the time back. Materialism is the cleanest tax because the receipt looks like a purchase.

The cage was well paid. That is the credential.

Deeper expertise, higher salary, larger cage. Indispensable means captured. The salary is the leash. The savings were the bolt cutters. I ran the retirement math. The number, the date, the walk-out. The math was not the obstacle. The obstacle was psychological. The strongest objection is fair, and I will state it. A man can leave a good salary and discover he traded a cage for a different boredom, and that the money was also the work he was good at. Granted. The answer is the list, not the exit. If the hours after the walk-out go to meh, the walk-out was another fine trade. The whisper that says you cannot leave is often the leash talking. It is not proof that every objection is the leash. Those are different sentences.

The unfundable monster and the refused board seats are the same cut. A harness declined on purpose. Paid well to stay put is the offer. No is the trade.

Inside the madness, pick a variable and push it. The pushing is the meaning on the days the result has not arrived. On the year scale the two stories meet. Labels wants outcomes. Games wants the push. The outcome that gets judged is whether you swung, and whether you showed up. That is Rule 2, applied to a calendar.

One portfolio, so the money essays stop contradicting the politics essays. Index fund inside the window you can still see. Land as the hedge against the window being wrong. One timeline. You do not get to tell the reader he will be wealthy in thirty years and that the system ends this decade. Pick the bet. Hedge the other. Write it once.

This, at the cost of that. Choose the failure before the day chooses it for you.
