Rule 3: Act

You find the truth by colliding with it.

Not by holding it politely in your head. Not by building a better map of a dinner you have not eaten. In the soft domains, the body, the marriage, the household, analysis without a cut is stasis with a better vocabulary. I know the vocabulary. I lived on it.

As an engineer I loved "it depends." Ask me a hard question and I would load the facts, map the branches, and hand you an answer with ten ways it could still be wrong. In a design review that is honest work. The load matters. The constraint matters. The trade you are willing to eat matters. Give me a gnarly system and I am a happy man.

Then I pointed that same brain at a body and watched it fail.

"It depends" at the dinner table is not wisdom. It is indecision wearing a lab coat. You can read the studies, weigh the confounders, respect the complexity, and six months later not one number has moved. Your wife is still on the meds. You are still gathering. You are still too smart to commit. The web you were proud of navigating navigated you into a chair.

I was that man. Read more than I had any business reading. Done less than the guy at the gym who could not name a pathway. Sophisticated and stuck. The careful reader is not the enemy. I was the careful reader. The enemy is the freeze.

So the house quit letting "it depends" be the last word. Not the facts. I still want the facts. The facts load, and then something has to get cut, or the facts were a hobby.

Here is the clutter, because the clutter is the actual disease.

What about the studies. What about the confounders. What about individual variation. What about the one paper that says the opposite. What about the microbiome, the thyroid, the cortisol, the sleep you did not measure, the label on the bottle, the wedding, the week that was hard, the doctor who said you are in range for your age. What if you are the exception. What if she is the exception. What if the thing you cut is the thing she needed. What if the literature has not settled it, because the literature has not settled anything a man can eat on a Tuesday.

So we cut the bread.

One thing. Run it. Meter. Keep it or kill it. Next thing. That is the whole method, and it does not get a name. Ruthless and fast, because slow is how the smart version of me stayed fat.

The meter is not a vibe. A hundred and ten pounds down. Effie off a stack of drugs she took for decades. The lesion on the thoracic spine, there on the earlier imaging, not there on the follow-up. State it flat. The numbers do the arguing. You cannot argue a man out of a body that works. Call it whatever you need to.

Failure is not a verdict. It is information. Sometimes you do the work for months and the body does not move. That is not the protocol failing you. That is a deeper hindrance standing up once the noise is gone. Get strong first. Get the walk in. Then the remaining problem stands out like a sore thumb, and you go after that one. Without the foundation you are guessing, and guessing is the old "it depends" with its coat off.

I will give you the miss, because a kill buys more trust than the wins.

The early version was gluten-free, because that was the door the internet had open, and she walked through it. Credit for the walk. It did not carry the result. We killed it as the answer. Not as a moral failure. As a cut that did not move the meter. A thing you believed in, measured, and threw out, is the same loop as a thing you kept. If you only keep, you are not colliding. You are collecting.

Under it is faith, and I mean the plain kind. Not a church. Faith is what makes you move before the proof is in. The system is too big for the full picture. You commit anyway and find out. Doubt is the voice that says "but what if it depends" at the second you were about to do the thing, and it pins you where you already are. Failure teaches. Doubt just freezes you.

The stake sits once, and then I am done performing it. I was betting reads against my wife's nervous system. That is not a blog experiment. That is why the cut has to be one variable, why the meter has to be real, and why a kill has to be allowed in this house. I can state the other side. The other side is that a soft system has confounders, that N=1 is not a trial, that a man can be wrong out loud and drag the person he loves with him. I grant it. Granting it is not a reason to wait for a literature that will not show up and cook dinner. You act on incomplete information. You do not pretend it was complete.

The split is the whole trick, and it is boring.

Think hard where thinking is the job. A lab panel. A design. A rule that has to hold. Then starve the thinking everywhere else. The food is stupid on purpose. The training is a short list. The schedule has as few doors in it as I can manage, because every open decision is a hallway the brain will walk looking for a lion. I am not a deep thinker about lunch. I already know lunch.

There are things in your control. There are things that are not. The disease is not. The fire was not. The cut on Tuesday is. Name the list. Act on the list. Walk away from the rest.

Load the facts. Then move like you believe them. The results will argue. Your vocabulary will not.
