You cannot opt out of inputs. You can only choose them.
The modern environment is, every minute of every day, running an enormous, well-engineered, well-funded brain-washing operation on every conscious adult inside it. Ads are the obvious version. The feed is the larger one. The label on the bottle, the pyramid on the poster, the pad in the exam room. None of it is neutral. None of it asked you.
You are a normal human animal who lived an entire life inside a food, media, and drug environment that was built, on purpose, to produce the outcome it produced. The fact that the outcome arrived is not evidence that you are defective. It is evidence that the engineering worked. Shame is the wrong reading of a successful machine. Shame is also useful to the machine. A ashamed customer buys the next product and does not pour the bottle out.
Here are the receipts. Not a vibe.
Ancel Keys built the anti-fat consensus by picking the countries that fit the graph and dropping the ones that broke it. The American Heart Association sold a "heart-healthy" sticker as a paid endorsement. Procter & Gamble was sitting on cottonseed waste from the textile business, put it in a can, and called it Crisco. The 1977 Dietary Goals put bread at the base of a life. Strip the fat out and you have to put something back. The something was sugar. Low-fat this and low-fat that, which is a polite way of saying high-sugar everything. The Sydney Diet Heart Study and the Minnesota Coronary Experiment, once somebody actually opened the buried data, showed the people who swapped animal fat for vegetable oil died more, not less. The data sat. The stickers did not.
That is the machine. It had a budget. It had a society. It had a government name on the poster. A person who believed the poster was not stupid. A person who believed the poster was the customer the poster was printed for.
My mother was that customer.
She was big my whole life. Gestational diabetes lit the fuse. Then the war on fat. Butter out. Margarine in. Bread as the foundation, because the poster said so. The body got sick. The mood went with it, because the gut and the hormones and the mood are one system in different hats. Then the antidepressants, one after another, most of them barely beating a sugar pill in trials run by the people selling the pill. The diet broke the body. The body dragged the mood. An industry was standing there to medicate the mood and never touch the cause. She never had a chance. The trap closed on her before I was even born, and she spent the rest of her life inside it thinking the walls were her fault.
These motherfuckers built that trap for money, and it had me lined up next.
That is the burn. It gets one paragraph. Then it gets banked.
Aimed inward, that anger is just another way to die. That is the version that ate her. Shame, then the next bite, then the story that the bite was a personal failure. Aimed outward, at the machine that built the trap, it is the cleanest fuel I have ever run on. It got me off the floor when fifteen years of knowing better did not. Ignition. Then cruise. The fury digs you out. Gratitude is what you run on once the inputs are yours and the body starts reporting back. Say the sequence once. Do not live in the fire. The fire is for the morning nothing else will move you.
Seeing is the first step of the fix. You cannot fix what you do not see. You can fix almost anything you have learned to see clearly. The seeing practice is not a journal. It is the cookie.
When you eat the cookie, eat the shit out of the cookie. Slow it down. Taste it. Notice whether you are hungry or whether the day was hard and the cookie is doing a job it was not designed for. That is not permission. That is the meter on a habit you already have. Once you can see the habit, you can cut it. Before that you are arguing with a fog.
After the seeing, the work is physical. Not a worldview. A kitchen.
Pour the seed-oil bottle out. Do not finish it. Pour it out. Tallow in the pan. Cast iron where the non-stick was. Glass where the plastic was. The phone in the other room, feed closed. Bulbs you chose. Blue blockers if the light is not yours. Posters on the gym wall, hung on purpose: Jocko, Peterson, Rogan, the Dune line. Not an eagle over a canyon with a serif word on it. Men and a sentence I wanted in my head during the ninety seconds between sets, because those ninety seconds were going to be filled by something, and the algorithm was the default.
There is no shame in the scaffolding. Pure willpower is a tax on cognition. The environment was built to deplete the tax base. I am not Goggins. I tried that version. It produced the mediocre result willpower produces in almost everyone who attempts it against this room. The posters are the practice. The phone on the counter is the practice. The bottle in the trash is the practice. Pretending you do not need the structure, then quietly losing to the structure someone else built, is the actual embarrassment.
The hinge is the date you knew.
My mother did not have this list. The knowledge was not in the house. The poster had the government's name on it, and the pad was what the visit produced. That cover is real, and it is hers. It is not yours. Once you can see the machine, the inputs are the job. The trap is real. You hold the key. Both sentences, or the piece is a lie.
I still want a lab. I still want a mechanism. I will meet a doctor halfway if the doctor will look at the meter instead of the sticker. Capture is not a reason to trust nothing. Capture is a reason to stop letting the captured institution choose lunch.
Choose the inputs. Or they get chosen for you. They already were.
