The work is the toll. Joy is what it buys.
Not a mood you adopt. A chemistry. The baseline that shows up after the inputs have been right long enough that the body stops sending invoices. It is almost embarrassing, which is how I know it is real. I am not a man who trusted this word. I distrusted it in other people, because it usually meant they had lowered the bar until mediocrity felt like a gift. This is not that. The bar is still there. The afternoon is just better.
Here is the hour, because the hour is the argument.
I mow. Heart up, then coming down. Body warm and used. I sit on the porch with a glass of cold water and the lawn is done and the rest of the afternoon sits a notch higher than the hour before it. That is the payment. It lasts. It does not crash at 4pm and ask for another hit. After the plunge, Effie chases the same thing, plain and simple. She gets in the cold because the cold pays, and the pay does not come with a bill. After I shovel the driveway in flip flops, like an iceman who came to move snow and giggle, the neighbors think I am crazy. The neighbors are also tired all the time, and I am not.
That is the whole recruitment pitch. The man holding the wall is having more fun than the man on the couch. Comfort, with the work removed, is the actual deprivation. I did not believe that from the outside either.
I have stood on both curves. That is the credential, not a vibe.
The big-tech years were spikes. Ship the thing, get the hit, feel clever, feel necessary. The trough was the fucking bill. None of the winners I watched on that curve were happy on it. They were between invoices. A real hour of work on the body lasts for hours, and it is better than any short victory I ever had at a keyboard. The fight is worth it because the fight is enjoyable, in the way the body pays you, in real time, for doing the work it was built to do. Fury got me off the floor. This is what I run on now that I am on the road. Both. In that order.
The narrow priority is not a prison. It is a spread you cannot get in a pill. Meat, the lift, the walk, the sleep, the phone in the other room. I leave the phone there all day and I do not miss it, which would have sounded like a lie to the man who used to check it between bites. The health fascist, if that is the label you need, is the one in the room having the best Tuesday afternoon of any human within fifty yards. The party is chemical. It is not a bit.
The timeline is the part I will not inflate, because inflation is how the supplement bottle talks.
Two weeks does not produce it. Two months produces a hint. Two years produces the transformation, and then the work is the smallest price the body will refuse to skip. A taste is available tonight. Walk hard for forty minutes in real shoes. Come home. Sit down. Drink the water. That is your data, not mine. If nothing moves, you have a data point. If the hour sits a notch higher, you have the first reading on the meter this whole site is about. I am not asking you to believe a man on the internet. I am asking you to run the hour.
There is no rest without the work in front of it. Pull the work out and the rest stops being rest. It becomes the low-grade unease that no couch fixes, because the couch was never the missing input. The work was. You do the thing. The body reports back. That report is the joy, and it is slightly ridiculous, and I am keeping the ridiculous part so this does not turn into a brochure.
Effie is feeling more of it every month, on the same protocol, off the pills that were supposed to manufacture the feeling and did not. I was weak, then furious, then this. The wall was the toll. This hour is what the toll bought.
